10 things to know about President Buhari’s new Chief of Staff, Ibrahim Gambari

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday appointed Prof Ibrahim Gambari, former Under Secretary General of the United Nations, as his new Chief of Staff.

Below are ten things you should know about Gambari.

  1. Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, a  Nigerian scholar and a diplomat, was born on 24th November, 1944, in Ilorin, Kwara state.
  2. Gambari attended King’s College, Lagos, and then attended the London School of Economics where he obtained his B. Sc. (Economics) degree in International Relations (1968)
  3. He later obtained his M.A. in 1970 and Ph. D. degrees in 1974 from Columbia University, New York, the USA in Political Science/International Relations.
  4. Gambari was later appointed as the Minister of External Affairs between 1984 and 1985. He was the pioneer Chancellor of the Kwara State University (KWASU) and now co-chairs the Albright-Gambari Commission.
  5. He was appointed by the SecretaryGeneral of United Nations Ban Ki-moon and the chairperson of the African Union Commission as Joint African Union-United Nations Special Representative for Darfur effective from 1st January 2010.
  6. Currently he is the Special Adviser on the International Compact with Iraq and Other Issues for the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
  7. Gambari, previously served as the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations (USG) for the Department of Political Affairs, DPA. He was appointed on 10th June, 2005, and assumed the post on July 1 of that year.
  8. Gambari is a member of the Johns Hopkins University’s Society of Scholars.
  9. He holds the National Honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR).
  10. Gambari was appointed as the Chief of staff to  President Muhammadu Buhari on May 12th 2020.
